Thanks for buying and supporting!
I too am anxious for the LOST Encyclopedia to come out. I guess it has been released? I’ll check my local stores today..
To answer your real question. Rousseau’s Maps, were used as my main guide when i drew the island into my mapping software. To do this, i used the base of the mountain ranges, as my guide, then ran some auto-calculations to build the mountains from the ground up. On this map you can see the mountain outline, a little better. The circle you refer to is what happens when two geographically close features are cartographically merged for aesthetic effect.
Another thing to consider.
To make my map geographically correct, i drew the island to the scale based off of many details from the show itself. I also projected the map to the south pacific region of the world. There is an old saying about projections…”They make cartographers SADD”….SADD stands for Shape, Area, Distance, and Direction. Projecting a map can cause distortions in any of these to your data.
So every paper or digital map, that is true to it’s region of the world, will have some minor inconsistencies to it’s real world counterpart.
I hope that fully answers your question…
